Just 12 hours after he was the first person to get an experimental Ebola vaccine, Dr. Lewis Rubinson started getting sick.
Rubinson chose to take the vaccine, which had not, at that time, been tested in humans after he pricked himself with a needle in an Ebola treatment centre in Sierra Leone.
“The patient developed malaise, nausea and fever 12 hours after the vaccination while on the transport jet,” Dr. Mark Mulligan of Emory University and colleagues wrote in a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Thursday.
They vaccine is made using a “live” virus called vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) genetically engineered to carry a small, piece of Ebola virus.
Since then, the vaccine has been tested in dozens of people and it’s being rolled out in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea in several different trials.
